Imerovigli

Imerovigli is a charming and fascinating village located on the western side of Santorini just 2km north of the capital Fira. Like Fira, Firostefani, Oia and other villages, Imerovigli is built on the rim of the Caldera overlooking the wonderful submerged volcano and the opposite islands of the bay, offering a wonderful view particularly at sunset.

The village of Imerovigli is located on the higher Caldera cliff, 300 metres over the sea level, and dominates the entire bay. Infact in the past Imerovigli has been for centuries the main watchtower to defend the island: its name comes from "vigla" which means "watchtower" and "imera" which means "day".

Close to the village, on the lower cliff, there is a cape called Skaros with a famous castle, watching the western entrance of the island, which was used to defend Santorini from pirates raids, and was never defeated during the 600 years of its existence. Nowadays there are only some ruins.

Infact the most part of the village was destroyed by the terrible earthquake of 1956 and many inhabitants had to relocate to surrounding villages. Nevertheless an expert restoration of Imerovigli to its former beauty gave birth to an exclusive village, therefore its now called "The Balcony of Santorini", for its breathtaking Caldera view.

Standing on the rocks of the overhanging cliff, Imerovigli, protected by the surrounding hills, offers shelter from strong winds (the Meltemi) blowing on the rest of the island.

Unlike the more lively Fira, Imerovigli is a very quiet and relaxing place to stay, dominated by the silence of the sunset and the ocean, and along with Oia it is the most glamorous and exclusive village of the island. Here you won't find any club or disco-bar, but only luxury hotels and suites with private swimming pool on the rim of the Caldera, gourmet restaurants and tavernas. A relaxing lifestyle makes Imerovigli the ideal place for long walks along the panoramic alleys or the old path, where the views are amazing and the nature is extraordinary.
