Saint-Nicolas

Description

Saint-Nicolas is a municipality of Belgium. It lies in the country's Walloon Region and Province of Liege. It is effectively a part of the greater Liège conurbation stretching west from Liège city centre towards Liège airport.

The population on January 1, 2016, was 24, 103 (11 530 men and 12 573 women), for an area of 6.84 km2.

It has the highest population density of any Belgian municipality outside the Brussels-Capital Region.

Since 1977 the municipality comprises the old municipalities of Montegnée, Saint-Nicolas, and Tilleur.

It owes its name to the erection in 1147, of a sanctuary, consecrated by the Bishop of Liège; Henry II of Leez, 22 July 1151, and dedicated to Saint Nicholas.  This sanctuary became a Priory, dependent of Abbaye Saint-Laurent, known as the chapel of Saint-Nicolas-George.  Church services were held there until the annexation of the Principality of Liège to the French,  at this time the chapel became an annex of the Church of Saint-Gilles Parossiale, then is was sold in 1807.  Become a barn during the 19th century, it was destroyed in 1906.

The town depends on the bishopric of Liège and includes six parishes: Holy family, St. Hubert, St. Joseph, St. Lambert, St. Nicholas and our Lady of the poor.
