Description
Ban Nong Chang Khuen is a village in Nong Chang Khuen Subdistrict, Mueang Lamphun District, Lamphun, about eight kilometres from Lamphun Town. It is the province’s largest longan producer.
The highlight of Ban Nong Chang Khuen is a winding road that serves as the gateway to the village. You will be fascinated by longan trees planted 10 kilometres along the roadside. Besides, tourists are very welcome to visit longan plantations, especially when the longan produces fruit.
Legend has it that a hundred years ago, “Khun Khem”, headman of Pa Kham Subdistrict, now Nong Chan Khuen Subdistrict, together with the headmen of other subdistricts and Prince of Lamphun held a welcoming ceremony for a group of the members of the royal family from Bangkok who paid a visit to the country’s northern region. A bunch of longans was given to the hosts as a gift from the visitors. The hosts shared and ate it. After eating, Khun Khem kept a seed and grew the longan at home. It then grew and yielded lots of good fruit. As a result, he started longan plantations in Ban Nong Chang Khuen and they remain until nowadays.
If you visit Lamphun in August, which is the time when the longan produces fruit, you will be able to taste sweet fresh longan fruit. In addition, Lamphun’s Longan Festival is held annually in August in Lamphun Town. There will be a beauty contest of cars decorated with longans, a longan fruit contest and a Miss Longan contest.
How to get there: From Chiang Mai, use Highway 106, Chiang Mai-Lamphun Road. When you reach Ban Pa We, turn right onto another road branching from the highway, and drive about seven kilometres along the route.
